This workshop provides teachers with hands-on strategies for teaching writing skills to beginning or at-risk students. The essential components of the writing process will be addressed using Diana Hanbury-King’s Writing Skills series. Essentials such as sentence writing, paragraph construction, purposes of writing, and components of an essay will be covered. Materials included.

Research demonstrates a direct correlation between a child developing strong phonological awareness skills and becoming a highly-skilled reader. Teachers learn the background of knowledge for early reading development, the progressing levels of phonological awareness instruction critical in developing successful readers and a range of targeted and purposeful activities to teach these critical foundational reading skills. Teachers will, further, learn how to bridge the connection between phonological skills and decoding and encoding (reading and spelling) development. Teachers also practice instructional techniques and make several activities and centers to use in the classroom. Materials included.

Participants will learn effective strategies for helping students improve their handwriting skills. Topics include: the importance of good handwriting; different styles of handwriting; pre-writing skills; and strategies for teaching print and cursive. Exercises and games designed to improve handwriting will be incorporated throughout the workshop.

Teachers K-5

Utilizing a variety of reading materials, class will explore pre-, during, and post-reading activities designed to develop student comprehension skills. The Reciprocal Reading technique and additional strategies will be taught for building comprehension in students who are on or near grade-level in decoding text. Participants will practice leading small groups in these techniques. Techniques will be presented for use with students of all ages and reading abilities, including promoting comprehension while listening to passages read aloud for those students unable to read grade-appropriate materials.

Teachers grades 3-5
