Explode The Code

Book A, Get Ready for The Code, teaches consonants b, f, m, k, r, and t. Get Ready for The Code, Get Set for The Code, and Go for The Code, which all introduce the consonant letters, comprise a three-book series of primers for the Explode The Code series.

Book B, Get Set for The Code, teaches consonants p, s, n, j, h, and d. Get Set for The Code Book B introduces students to the sounds of initial consonants. It also prepares students for reading and writing through letter formation, tracking skills, and phonemic awareness activities.

Book C, Go for The Code, teaches consonants c, l, g, w, y, v, z, x and q.

Go for The Code Book C introduces students to the sounds of initial and final consonants. This book prepares students for reading and writing through letter formation, tracking skills, and phonemic awareness activities.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards, designed for use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, may be used for supplementary visual and auditory work. Picture cards provide a visual cue and match the key words in the Explode The Code student books. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition.

The Teacher’s Guide, Books A–C, expands on the skills presented in the Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The Explode The Code Placement Test is a quick assessment designed to help teachers place their students in the appropriate level of the Explode The Code series. The tests assess the skills presented in the Explode The Code series.

Book 1 begins with a consonant pretest. It then teaches short a with final consonants (particularly t, n, m, and d) and the other short vowels. Review lessons are provided throughout the book, which concludes with a four-page posttest.

Book 1 1/2 provides further practice in short vowel sounds and the final consonants taught in Book 1. There are review lessons throughout the book, which concludes with a four-page posttest.

Book 2 teaches the initial consonant blends bl, cl, fl, gl, sk, sl, pl, cr, dr, gr, br, fr, pr, tr, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tw, and the final consonant blends -mp, -sk, -st, -ft, -lt, -nt, -lf, -lp, -nd, -nk. There are also two review lessons and a four-page posttest.

Book 2½ reviews the initial and final consonant blends taught in Book 2. There is also a cumulative review, a final review, and a posttest.

The Teacher’s Guide and Key, Books 1–2, expands on the skills presented in the student books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

This set of 54 illustrated cards can be used to reinforce or extend the sounds taught in Explode The Code Books 1–3. In addition to the 26 letters of the alphabet, this set also includes consonant digraphs, blends, vowel digraphs, and diphthongs.

Book 3 teaches one-syllable words ending in a long vowel, including -y; silent-e words; the digraphs sh, th, wh, ch, -ng, -ck; trigraph -tch; digraphs with silent e; and vowel digraphs ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, ow. There are also two review lessons and a four-page post-test.

Beyond The Code develops comprehension and thinking skills through original stories and exercises.
